MEET THE CHARACTERS IN THE STORY
Mrs. Annathena Gilly Gully from Puddle Rumple Tilly Willy - a quirky lady, dresses funny, gets laughed at and teased for her long name, doesn't like children very much, now is a widow, walks everywhere, not afraid to say what is on her mind, sometimes is not too polite.
Maurice - a big green parrot...no one knows where he came from or how long she has had him, but he is her pet. He likes to fly around the inside of her house and often repeats what she says. He has never been out of the house. He will eat other things besides crackers. He is often curious and also very smart.
The Mayor - likes to feel important; doesn't always have as much to do as people think; likes to give advice. . The owner of the market - speaks with an accent and keeps a close watch on all the food. When Maurice grabs a tiny bit of broccoli the owner gets mad. Maybe this has happened before, only with people snatching food....so the owner keeps a knife handy, both for cutting up food and chasing thieves. The Mayor's secretary - bored and not too smart; not much work to do for the mayor; frightens easily; would rather read a book. The Lawyer - is far-sighted. This means the ability to see things far away but not up close..that is why the lawyer has thick glasses. There is no secretary so it probably means the lawyer hasn't been in business very long. The lawyer either has a cold or an allergy to the office cat.
The office cat -we don't know if it is male or female, and it doesn't have a name. The lawyer just calls it "the cat". Wonder how the cat would get along with Maurice? The Teacher - the teacher is smart, thoughtful and patient. You can tell by the wall board the children are encouraged to read good books and do math. The suggestions to Annathena to bring Maurice in the fall so the children can meet him might mean that someday there will be another story...but right now this is the only story you will find to read. The Judge's secretary - businesslike and has probably been the judge's secretary for several years. The secretary wears impressive clothing and knows how to handle most situations calmly. However, Maurice upsets the secretary, and life in that office may never be the same. The Judge - very smart, wise and has been a judge for a number of years. Is respected, has a sense of humor, but when Annathena's name is heard and when she barges into the Judge's chamber, the judge is a bit embarassed and apologizes for laughing. Even though the judge offers to help, the judge still laughs and doesn't seem to think too much of Annathena's reason for coming to the judge's office. Mr. William Bartholomew Applethwait Pfleugerpinple Lacypants the Third- a surprise addition at the end of the story. Another person with a long and funny name who sympathizes with Annathena. Will he show up in a sequel if there ever is another story? hmmmmmmm... The older girl - this girl has no identity, at least no name, but she likes to boss the younger children around that live in the neighborhood. She doesn't like Annathena, though we don't know why. Do you know why? The children - a bunch of young children living in Annathena's neighborhood, who constantly tease her. The older girl has made them into a gang. When they see the parrot they are fascinated, and start to pay more attention to Maurice than to the older girl. They still continue to tease Annathena, but....... |
