SCHOOL DAYS

        (chorus)
School days, school days,
Good old golden rule days
Readin' and 'ritin' and 'rithmetic,
Taught to the tune of a hick'ry stick,
You were my queen in calico,
I was your bashful barefoot beau,
And you wrote on my slate,
 "I love you, Joe,"
When we were a couple of kids.

There were no notebooks and paper might have been
scarce.  So all children had a small "slate" which was
a small chalk board with a wooden frame around it that
each child carried to school and wrote on to do their lessons.
The hickory stick was what the teacher used to keep the
children's attention in class, by sometimes hitting it on a
desk or using it as a pointer to the big board in the classroom.
